A rea\u00e7\u00e3o resulta na forma\u00e7\u00e3o de coque. <\/p>\n<p>Foi durante o desenvolvimento das primeiras instala\u00e7\u00f5es industriais de craqueamento t\u00e9rmico que surgiu o forno tubular \u2013 um verdadeiro reator para a unidade. Este foi ent\u00e3o amplamente adotado em todas as outras instala\u00e7\u00f5es de refino como um meio eficaz de fornecer calor aos produtos processados. <\/p>\n<p>Atualmente, o craqueamento t\u00e9rmico \u00e9 realizado na parte pesada dos res\u00edduos (res\u00edduos de v\u00e1cuo), seja moderadamente por viscorredu\u00e7\u00e3o ou severamente por coqueifica\u00e7\u00e3o. Tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 utilizado com vapor (craqueamento a vapor) na petroqu\u00edmica para produzir olefinas. <\/p>\n<p>A convers\u00e3o generalizada de destilados de v\u00e1cuo e a redu\u00e7\u00e3o nas quantidades de petr\u00f3leo bruto processado levaram \u00e0 separa\u00e7\u00e3o de todos os destilados de v\u00e1cuo. Isto resultou em uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o correlativa de res\u00edduo de v\u00e1cuo superior aos requisitos de betume. Os excedentes altamente viscosos s\u00e3o dilu\u00eddos com diesel para obter uma viscosidade de mistura em linha com a especifica\u00e7\u00e3o exigida para o \u00f3leo combust\u00edvel pesado.  <\/p>\n<p>A viscorredu\u00e7\u00e3o do res\u00edduo sob v\u00e1cuo \u00e9 um processo de craqueamento t\u00e9rmico moderado que \u00e9 cada vez mais utilizado. Isso ocorre porque, al\u00e9m de produzir menos destilados leves, permite obter um res\u00edduo menos viscoso, reduzindo, portanto, a quantidade de gas\u00f3leo de dilui\u00e7\u00e3o introduzida no \u00f3leo combust\u00edvel pesado e, consequentemente, a quantidade de \u00f3leo combust\u00edvel pesado produzida. Em alguns casos, esta quantidade ainda excede os requisitos do mercado.  <\/p>\n<p>Nestes casos, a coqueifica\u00e7\u00e3o a v\u00e1cuo do res\u00edduo, que \u00e9 um processo de craqueamento t\u00e9rmico severo, substitui a viscorredu\u00e7\u00e3o.
